Relief!

Tomorrow's bike ride got cancelled due to the fact that it's supposed to snow! On the down side, it's going to be on Sunday instead and I fully intend to be hungover on Sunday after the birthday debauchery that is sure to ensue tomorrow night. So....I will be missing practice. BUT, I will make sure to at least go swim some laps tonight or tomorrow to make up for it.

Anyway....I am 30 years old today!!!! And I have to admit that training for a triathlon makes me feel at least like I'm only 29! LOL! But on a serious note, something tells me that this next chapter in my life is going to be GREAT!!!!

Wednesday, February 25, 2009: 45 minute yoga class, 3 mile run

Bummer....

I just read my email about Saturday's training and I must admit, I am completely bummed out.... According to our training schedule, we are supposed to swim Saturday morning. That's what is on the schedule we received a month ago prior to training. So all week long, I have been prepared to swim on Saturday. Well....according to our email, we have an option of either cycling 10 miles on Saturday, or going to a swim clinic on Sunday. Being that we are going out Saturday night for my birthday, Sunday is automatically out. I will probably not be getting home until 3am that night, so swimming at 7am on Sunday is just not a good idea. I'm really not fond of drowning.... So...that leaves cycling on Saturday. It's supposed to be about 20 degrees Saturday morning...and on a bike, it's usually even 20 degrees colder. That totally SUCKS. I'm really quite annoyed because TOMORROW is my actual birthday, but I told Randy we could not do anything tomorrow night since I would have practice on Saturday. Had I known that swimming would be an option on Sunday, I would have chosen to go out tomorrow night instead of Saturday night. But now everything is all planned and we can't change it. I'm so frustrated right now. I know I just need to suck it up and deal with it, but I'm just not in the mood. What a way to start off the day....

**EDIT** I just realized that I bet most of my team will opt to swim on Sunday, which means I may be cycling along on Saturday....ugh....that sucks even more.

Tuesday's Workout

This week has been so busy, it's been hard to squeeze everything in. I wasn't able to attend muscle conditioning yesterday due to scheduling conflicts, but I was able to do some weight training last night at home. Today I have yoga and then I have a 3 mile run when I get home. It's supposed to be a beautiful day out, so I'm looking forward to it!

Here's yesterday's official workout:

Tuesday, February 24, 2009: 30 minutes weight training & ab work

Yesterday's Workout

I wasn't able to make it to yoga yesterday because I had a meeting I had to attend instead. I'm also not going to be able to make it to muscle conditioning today because I have a luncheon. I guess I'll just have to lift weights at home tonight instead. I did, however, make it to the pool to swim laps last night. 22 laps to be exact. Go me.

Monday, February 23, 2009: 22 laps

I Lied & I Cheated

That's right. I lied about taking today off from working out. And I cheated because I ran tonight to get out of running tomorrow. Yep. I'm a huge baby and when it came down to running tomorrow morning at 7am in 20 degrees with a wind chill of 12 degrees OR running this evening while it was still 56 degrees, I went ahead and chose tonight over tomorrow.

I know, I know....I'm being a huge baby about this whole cold weather business. But here's the deal: race day for me is June 28th. So do I really need to prepare my body for running in the cold? Not really. And yesterday was just a weight training day, so it's not like I didn't give my body a day of rest before running again. So really, it's all good....right? So then why do I feel sooo frikkin guilty about bailing on practice tomorrow?? :\

Friday, February 20, 2009: 2.8 mile run. Was supposed to be 3 miles, but I didn't measure out my route until after I ran it. I was close tho.

My New Running Shoes:

I will be wearing these for the first time outside tomorrow. I've never ran in Sauconys before. Does anyone else have an opinion on them? This is what they recommended for me at the running store. I've always worn New Balance in the past. I'm excited to see how these work.

Taking Today Off

Today is going to be a day of rest. After yoga and running on Wednesday and muscle conditioning yesterday, I'm pretty sore today. Seriously, this yoga class always leaves me sore. It's a really good class. I mean, I knew that yoga helps to build strength as well as flexibility, but I just never realized I would be so sore from it. I'm always sore the next day or two, but my coach said that a good yoga class can actually take the place of weight training. I've taken yoga before, but the instructor I have now is just a lot better, I think. I really do feel like I'm getting stronger from this class.

I finally made it up to my chiropractor last night and it was MUCH NEEDED. Pretty much every bone in my back and neck popped. I needed adjusted BADLY. He also did acupuncture on my knee, so hopefully that will help. But I definitely think that taking the day off today is a wise thing to do.

I have to run tomorrow morning and I have to admit that I'm super freaked out about it. It's only 3 miles, but it's supposed to be about 20 degrees tomorrow morning, and with the wind it's actually supposed to feel like 12. :( I have never ran in anything colder than probably 45. I have a feeling I'm in for a rude awakening.

I did it!

I ran my 3 miles last night - woot! Yes, I realize 3 miles isn't that much to a more seasoned runner. But considering that I just had a baby 6 months ago and just recently started running again, I was pretty proud of myself. I haven't ran 3 miles in at least 2 1/2 years...maybe longer.

Now, I have to be honest, I didn't run the entire three miles. I did take a couple brief walking breaks. But I actually did 3.25 miles and I'm sure I ran 2.5 of it. I was able to increase my running pace from what it has been recently, so that's a plus. And I'm actually not going to let myself feel guilty for the walking. My walking pace was still fast AND it is helping to train my body to be able to recover from a walking break and start running again. I've heard that runners that do not train with walking breaks often have a hard time being able to start running again if they have to stop and walk. So when it's all said and done, I still completed 3.25 miles and that's what's important.

I think my new Saucony's are gonna work out just fine. Not sure about the patellar tendon band tho. I'm not sure if I had it on wrong or what, but it was kind of rubbing me and it didn't really feel like it was helping my knee at all. I think I need to check with my coach on Saturday to see if I'm wearing it correctly. My knee is hurting a bit today. Shins are okay (as of right now) but I'm sure I'm gonna be stiff later on. I was in such a hurry to pick Rylie up from gymnastics after my run that I completely forgot to stretch! I know, huge mistake. I did stretch once I got home, but that was probably 45 minutes after the run. I guess better late than never, but by then my muscles had already cooled down.

Anyway, here's yesterday's official workout:

Wednesday, February 18, 2009: 45 minute yoga class, 3.25 mile TM run

Wednesday, February 18, 2009

I suck...

I was supposed to ride my bike yesterday, but I was completely zapped of energy. Not just tired - but like couldn't even get off the couch when I got home. I meant to go to the chiropractor and I was too tired for that. I even made Randy take Rylie to dance because I was so drained. I'm sure that all the drinking I did over the weekend was to blame. Regardless, it was the first training day I skipped and I'm feeling incredibly guilty about it, even tho it was only a 5 mile bike ride. I did, however, do 45 minutes of muscle conditioning. So I guess the day wasn't a total bust.

Tuesday, February 17, 2009: 45 minutes muscle conditiong

Tonight I have a 3 mile run....AND I get to run in my new Sauconys! Yay! AND, since it's my first run in them and I was told to test them out indoors (that way if they don't work, I can exchange them, but I cannot exchange them once they've been worn outside), I have an excuse to run on the treadmill instead of in the freezing cold. I know, I know....I'm a baby. Oh yeah, and I got a new patellar tendon band that I will be using for the first time tonight too. That should really help my knee, which has been bothering me quite a bit lately. I hope this band helps.

I really hope I don't end up feeling as drained as I did yesterday at the end of the day. I have a doctor's appointment at 3:15. When I get home, I plan to take a 5 Hour Energy shot and then eat an apple and some power bar gel tabs about 30 minutes before I head to the gym. I won't be able to get to the gym until 6:30 when I drop Rylie off for gymnastics. Hopefully I'll enough energy to sustain a 3 mile run that late in the day. I wish I could go earlier, considering I get up at 5am everyday....but with a family, it's just hard to find the right time that works for everyone and not just me.

Success in Swimming

Our team had a swim clinic on Saturday and I really learned a lot. The most important thing I took away from that practice was to kick less. My coach reminded me that in a triathlon, I will need to save my legs for the cylcing and running, so I need to kick less during my swim and focus on my stroke. Best piece of advice ever. Honestly, I feel like I'm going slower when I don't kick much, but I am in fact going faster and using fewer strokes since I'm reaching further. That really helped. I kept that in mind when I swam on my own yesterday. It will be interesting to see how our open water swims go. It will be a LOT different than swimming in a pool. Coach even had us swim 3 to a lap on Saturday to get used to being crowded - that gave me anxiety, but I see the point in doing it. I've also had to switch up what stroke I do after awhile, like do the breast stroke or side stroke to keep my head out of water for a bit while I catch my breath. Hopefully as time goes on, I'll be doing this less and less.

After practice Saturday, I went to get fitted for running shoes. I bought a pair of Saucony's, along with several pairs of socks, body glide, a patellar tendon band, and a variety of GU, gels, fuel gummies, etc. Oh yeah, and I bought some electrolyte capsules. I think I'm in good shape as far as gear goes now.

So, to recap, here's my workouts for the past few days:

Friday, February 13, 2009: Rest

Saturday, February 14, 2009: Swim clinic

Sunday, February 15, 2009: Rest

Monday, February 16, 2009: Swam 20 laps

Today I have muscle conditioning and a 5 mile bike ride. Tomorrow and Saturday are running days - 3 miles each day. I'm excited to try out my new shoes and patellar tendon band - should really help with my tendonitis.

By the way, I've gotten $170 in donations in the past week, so yay for that! And thanks to everyone who has donated - you rock! If anyone else would like to donate, please click on this link: http://pages.teamintraining.org/mid/HyveeTri09/arobbins

Feb 11 & 12

Wednesday, February 11, 2009: 45 minute yoga class

Thursday, February 12, 2009: 45 minute muscle conditioning class, swam 10 laps

Today was my first day in the pool. Wow....it's been so long since I swam, I kinda forgot what it was even like, LOL. It was only 10 laps...but I had to take a breather pretty much after every lap. When I got out of the pool, my legs felt like jello. It didn't really take that long, it was just a shock for my body. I swim again on Saturday and Monday, so I should be able to pick this back up in no time. I wonder how I will feel tomorrow.....?

Feb 10

Well, muscle conditioning ended up getting cancelled yesterday because the instructor was sick. I did, however, end up going for a nice little bike ride after work since it was so nice out. The weather is supposed to start getting cold again today and might even snow later! So I figured I better take advantage of weather.

Tuesday, February 10, 2009: 4.5 mile bike ride

Today I have yoga. I won't get to go to the gym tonight to do any cardio because Randy is going somewhere to watch the US Soccer game, so I'll have the girls. Ry has gymnastics tonight too, so that should be fun trying to cart them both around. Good times. Tomorrow = swimming!!!

Feb 9 - Workout

Monday, February 9, 2009: 45 minute yoga class, 2 mile run

I was a little nervous about my run yesterday. The temp was warm, but the wind was freakin INSANE! I was really not looking forward to running in that wind. But I have to say....I kicked that run's ass! I don't know what came over me, but I was so energized and I felt great! I mean, at the end, I felt like I could keep going. I'm really starting to enjoy running. I don't go that fast and I don't go that far, and maybe that's WHY I like it....I don't really know. But so far so good.

Running isn't on my schedule again until next Monday and I have to run 3 miles then! It's been a couple years since I've ran 3 miles, so that'll be an adventure. But I'm looking forward to it. I'm swimming the rest of this week. Now THAT will be a challenge - I haven't swam in YEARS!!!

I have muscle conditioning today and I'm gonna try to hit up the gym for some elliptical time after work. It's gonna be a great week!

Feb 7th - FIRST PRACTICE!!!

Saturday was my first team practice and I'm excited to announce that not only did I do just fine, BUT....we had another girl join the team - yay!!!! She's my age too, so that's awesome! We rode together and are right at the same cycling pace, so that was cool. The route we did was VERY hilly, but def a good workout. I'm actually surprised that I wasn't sore - just my ass from the seat, as normal. Anyway, here's my workout for Saturday:

Saturday, February 6, 2009: 8 mile bike ride

After the ride, we had a fitness seminar. I learned a lot - mostly about tricks & gadgets for running. I'm excited to test some of this stuff out. I also learned how to keep myself hydrated and nourished DURING a workout - what to take/eat during the middle of a long run/ride, etc. Very interesting. I will be going to Gary Gribble's next weekend to get fitted for shoes and to also buy some other odds & ends. The team gets a 20% discount next weekend - woohoo!!

On the schedule for today - a 2 mile run. The weather is supposed to be in the 60's all week, so it will be a great day for a run! Saturday was actually beautiful out - in the 50's, so our ride was perfect. I'm so glad to finally be officially training for this tri! I can't wait to see how this all goes! :)

Feb 4 & 5 Workouts

Well, it's official - I have a sinus infection. I kind of figured that last week, but I started to get better. But this week, I started to get worse again. I took Ry to the doctor on Wednesday and they treated her for a sinus infection. Wednesday night, I could hardly sleep. My sinuses hurt pretty bad, as did my head, plus I've had fluid on my ears for days and could hardly hear. So, I stayed home from work yesterday and went to the doctor to confirm that I do, in fact, have a pretty bad sinus infection. I still don't feel great, but the good news is that it's not in my chest, so I can still go to practice tomorrow. I also haven't let it interfere (too much) with training this week. I went ahead and ran my required mile on Wednesday, so that's good. Here's what I've done:

Wednesday, February 4, 2009: 30 minutes on treadmill - ran 1.5 miles (consecutive), walked 1 mile. Total calories: 270.

I was only required to do 1 mile, but I felt that since I've been running some, I could go ahead and push myself a little further since I've got 3 miles coming up soon and I need to be prepared. I wasn't feeling great tho, so I didn't shoot for 2 miles, just 1.5. I still walked out the rest.

Thursday, February 5, 2009: 30 minutes of weight training focusing on biceps, triceps, and hamstrings.

I was feeling pretty yucky yesterday. I mean, I stayed home from work and everything. But I did some weight training at home just to keep in the routine. I'm taking today off to rest and tomorrow we have team practice - 8 miles on the bike. I really hope I do okay. I'm just nervous since I'm not feeling well and since it'll just be me and the 3 guys. I'm worried they'll take off and leave me in the dust and then I'll be lost since I'm not familiar with that part of the city. I really hope I can keep up so I don't get lost!

WISH ME LUCK!!!!

Feb 2 & 3 Workouts

Monday, February 2, 2009: 45 minute yoga class, 30 minutes on stationary bike - 10 miles. Avg speed = 20 mph.

I was supposed to ride my bike 5 miles on Monday. I don't have my trainer yet to ride inside and it's hard for me to get out of the house to ride during the week because it is dark out by the time Randy gets home and I need to be home when Ry gets home from school. So...I went to the gym and rode the stationary bike. I rode 10 miles instead of 5 because I feel that the stationary bike is not a good comparison to an actual bike and felt I needed to go further than just 5, with this in mind.

Tuesday, February 3, 2009: 45 min muscle conditioning class.

Tonight I am supposed to run 1 mile. Coach said to stick to the schedule, but I really want to do 2 miles instead of 1....because I have to run 2 miles on Monday and then the following week I start running 3 miles. I feel like if I am already able to do 1 mile, I really need to push myself or else those 3 mile days are really gonna kick my ass. And since I've already been running at least 2 miles, I think it should be okay.

This whole training thing is really starting to feel real. I really hope I can make this work!!!

Hy-Vee Triathlon

I went to my official kickoff meeting last night. There were a TON of people there. We currently have a team for the San Diego Marathon, the Seattle Marathon, the Tahoe Century Ride, the Yosemite Hike, and the Hy-Vee Tri. All the other groups were pretty large in size....but our tri team consists of only 6 members!!! Wow - I guess most people find it intimidating to do all three sports in one event.

I'll tell you what IS intimidating - the fact that I am the only person on my team that has never done an endurance event before! AND the fact that I am only 1 of 2 females, and the other - though she is 47 - has completed a 1/2 Ironman!!! I have to say, I am definitely nervous! I know I will be at the back of the pack at each practice. I'm scared that I won't be able to keep up! In fact, our frist practice is on Saturday and the 2 people that I thought might be relatively close to my level won't even be there. The other 3 that will be there are all guys - 2 of them are pretty young (1 being my mentor and having completed 3 TNT events already...oh, and he's only like 25 - so in great shape), and the other guy just ran an 1/2 marathon a couple weeks ago. So yeah, I'm pretty freaked out about practice - I'm afraid they'll all be so far ahead of me that I'll get lost! Seriously! The area that we are practicing at is an area of the city that I am not familiar with at all! And if the training route is not marked out, I will seriously be left behind and probably lost. I'm pretty nervous!

With all that aside, I WILL still be there. Nothing is going to stop me. I'm nervous.....but determined.

January Totals

First off, I didn't blog all last week.... I was sick and the only day I worked out was Monday. Then I finally went and ran on Saturday. So here are those days really quickly:

Monday, January 26, 2009: 45 minute yoga class

Saturday, January 31, 2009: 1.5 mile run outside - windy

So now, here are my totals for the month:

Total days worked out: 18
Total days of cardio: 13
**9 days of running (roughly 16.7 miles logged)
**1 day of cycling
**4 days of elliptical
(There was a day that I ran AND did the elliptical, which is why the numbers total 14 days, instead of 13)
Total days of yoga: 5
Total days of weight training: 7

I have to admit, 18 days is a lot better than I thought I did, especially considering that I was sick for a week. Hopefully February will be even better! I will get started logging the Feb workouts soon. :)
